Topsy Turvy match sees Maribyrnong Greens Reserves blow a 2-1 lead
15 Jul 2015 by Amir Balagic
Just as it looked as though the Greens had secured a come-from-behind victory to win away against Truganina, a late goal from the Hornets ensure both teams share the spoils.
Truganina opened the scoring when they found a way through the Maribyrnong defence and scored a composed finish to put the home side up 1-0 in freezing conditions.
With a lot of fight and grit showed by the away side, the boys knew they could get a goal and with the way they were playing and progressing with the play, a goal was begging to come.
After much confusion in the box with hard working attacking midfielder Stephen Pollock, he finally broke through and managed to slot the ball home and give Maribyrnong a way back into the game, he’s hard working, undeniable passion for the team really spurred the side on to grab another goal.
As the second half progressed the Hornets wilted and it was little surprise when Maribyrnong midfielder Dom Sculli made a surging run after a beautifully timed and well-seen pass from Greens young wide midfielder Tarik Nezic who had one of the best games in a Maribyrnong shirt this season.
The goal put Maribyrnong up 2-1 and looking comfortable after a brilliant fight-back.
The Greens then sat back in the cold, allowing their opponents to start dominating and wanting a late equalizer. The temperature at Arndell Reserve was freezing and the boys knew they had to start shuffling.
A late counter surge from the Hornets who had a shot easily saved from goalkeeper Andrew Michaels booted the ball into the middle of the park, but with poor conditions, the ball only made it’s way to a Truganina midfielder who freed up some space and saw a run from one of their wingers who took control and used his pace to perfection and slotting the ball past Michaels to give The Hornets a late equalizer.
After a lengthy spell on the sidelines, Maribyrnong defender Amar Sarhatlic made his return to the side and had his thoughts on the performance. ’The boys played really well and showed great character and determination in the second half. Was an unlucky to not get the three points in the end but we should get the win next week hopefully". Maribyrnong midfielder and a boy who is staking his claim with a fine assist Tarik Nezic also added “We started slowly and struggled to find form and after conceding in the first half the boys needed to come back firing in the second half and we did so, we were just unfortunate to concede late”
Another good performance from the reserves which see them continue a great undefeated streak going into their match without current coach Emir Osmanagic who’ll currently be on break until the end of the season, let’s hope the boys can continue this form.
